Indian Rice Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups basmati rice, washed and soaked for 30 minutes
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 green cardamom pods, crushed
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. Heat the ghee or oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add the bay leaf, cloves, cardamom and cinnamon stick. Fry for a few seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add the cumin seeds and fry for another few seconds until they start to sizzle.
  4. Add the rinsed and soaked basmati rice to the pot and fry for a couple of minutes, stirring constantly to coat the rice with the spices.
  5. Add the water and salt to the pot and stir well to combine.
  6. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and cook the rice for 15-20 minutes until all the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender.
  7. Fluff the rice with a fork and remove the bay leaf, cloves, cardamom pods and cinnamon stick before serving.
