Bagnat Bread Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 round (or oval) loaf of bread
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 2 ripe tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 can tuna, drained
  • 1/2 cup black olives, pitted and chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut the top off the bread to make a lid and set it aside.
  2. Gently pull out some of the bread from the center of the loaf, leaving about 1/2 inch of bread on the bottom and sides.
  3. Crush the garlic cloves and mix them with olive oil. Brush the inside of the bread with the garlic oil.
  4. Layer the tomatoes, red onion, tuna, and black olives on top of each other. Season with salt and pepper as needed.
  5. Replace the lid and wrap the loaf tightly with plastic wrap.
  6. Refrigerate the bread for at least 1 hour. This allows the flavors to meld together.
  7. When ready to serve, cut the bread into wedges.

Verdict

Bagnat bread is a flavorful and satisfying sandwich that makes a great picnic or party food. The combination of the garlic oil, tuna, tomatoes, onions, and olives is both tangy and savory. The bread itself becomes deliciously soft and moist from the tuna and vegetable juice.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the bagnat bread with a side salad or a bowl of soup for a complete meal. The leftover bread can be wrapped and stored in the refrigerator for up to two days, making it a great make-ahead dish.
