Baklava Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 lb. phyllo pastry sheets
- 1 lb. unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
- 1 1/2 cups chopped almonds
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 lemon, juiced
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Melt the unsalted butter in a small saucepan or in the microwave.
- Mix together the chopped walnuts, chopped almonds, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves in a bowl.
- Unwrap the phyllo pastry and lay it flat on a clean working surface. Cover with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
- Brush the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.
- Add the first sheet of phyllo pastry to the baking dish and brush with melted butter.
- Add another sheet of phyllo pastry on top and brush with melted butter. Repeat this process for another 8-10 layers.
- Add half of the nut mixture on top of the phyllo pastry layers.
- Repeat the layering process with phyllo pastry and melted butter for another 8-10 layers.
- Add the remaining half of the nut mixture on top of the phyllo pastry layers.
- Add the remaining layers of phyllo pastry and melted butter on top of the nut mixture, repeating the process for another 8-10 layers.
- Cut the baklava into small diamond-shaped pieces using a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
- While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by mixing together the granulated sugar, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the syrup is thickened.
- Once the baklava is finished baking, remove from the oven and pour the hot syrup all over the top of the baklava.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on top.
