Baklava Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. phyllo pastry sheets
  • 1 lb. unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped almonds
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Melt the unsalted butter in a small saucepan or in the microwave.
  3. Mix together the chopped walnuts, chopped almonds, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves in a bowl.
  4. Unwrap the phyllo pastry and lay it flat on a clean working surface. Cover with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out.
  5. Brush the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.
  6. Add the first sheet of phyllo pastry to the baking dish and brush with melted butter.
  7. Add another sheet of phyllo pastry on top and brush with melted butter. Repeat this process for another 8-10 layers.
  8. Add half of the nut mixture on top of the phyllo pastry layers.
  9. Repeat the layering process with phyllo pastry and melted butter for another 8-10 layers.
  10. Add the remaining half of the nut mixture on top of the phyllo pastry layers.
  11. Add the remaining layers of phyllo pastry and melted butter on top of the nut mixture, repeating the process for another 8-10 layers.
  12. Cut the baklava into small diamond-shaped pieces using a sharp knife.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-50 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  14. While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by mixing together the granulated sugar, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the syrup is thickened.
  15. Once the baklava is finished baking, remove from the oven and pour the hot syrup all over the top of the baklava.
  16. Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on top.

Verdict

Baklava is a delicious and rich dessert that is perfect for special occasions or as a special treat. The combination of crisp phyllo pastry and sweet, nutty filling is both decadent and satisfying. The syrup topping adds a lovely sweetness and moisture to the dessert, making it even more indulgent.
