Ingredients

  • 2 9-inch pie crusts (homemade or store-bought)
  • 8 cups thinly sliced, peeled and cored apples (use a mixture of tart and sweet apples, such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place one pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until the apples are evenly coated.
  4. Pour apple filling into the pie crust and dot the top with pieces of butter.
  5. Place the second pie crust over the filling and crimp the edges together to seal.
  6. Use a sharp knife to make several slits in the top of the crust to let steam escape.
  7. Brush the top crust with the egg wash and sprinkle with sugar.
  8. Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  9. Allow the pie to cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.

Serving Suggestions
