Ingredients

  • 8 slices of bread, preferably sourdough
  • 8 slices of ham, cooked
  • 8 slices of Gruyere cheese
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and add in the minced garlic.
  3. Whisk in the all-purpose flour and cook for 2 minutes.
  4. Slowly pour in the whole milk, whisking constantly until no lumps remain.
  5. Add in the Dijon mustard and salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently until the sauce thickens.
  7. Turn off the heat and set aside.
  8. On a baking sheet, place 4 slices of bread and top each slice with a slice of ham and a slice of Gruyere cheese.
  9. Top with the remaining slices of bread to form sandwiches.
  10. Using a pastry brush, brush the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter on top of each sandwich.
  11. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the sandwiches are crispy and the cheese is melted.
  12. Serve the croque monsieurs with the garlic sauce drizzled on top.
