Easy Croque Monsieur Recipe
Ingredients:
- 8 slices of white bread
- 8-12 slices of ham (depending on thickness)
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 cup grated Gruyere cheese
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- Melt 2 tbsp of butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned, stirring constantly.
- Gradually pour in milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
- Add salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Stir and bring the sauce to a boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes, until the sauce thickens, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat and add half a cup of grated Gruyere cheese. Stir until melted and the sauce is smooth.
- Melt the remaining butter in a small pan or microwave.
- On a baking sheet, place a slice of bread, top it with a slice of ham, and then 1-2 tbsp of cheese sauce. Repeat for the second layer.
- Place the remaining 4 slices of bread on top and brush the melted butter over them.
- Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top of each sandwich.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove from oven and serve hot.
