  • 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled, and cored apples (about 6 medium apples)
  • 3/4 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoon of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon of milk
  • Sugar for sprinkling on top

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Make the pie crust, divide it in two disks, wrap them individually in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  3. Peel, core and thinly slice apples and place them in a large bowl.
  4. In a small bowl whisk together sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt; pour mixture over the apples and toss to evenly coat them.
  5. Roll out one of the disks, place it in the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish, and trim the edges.
  6. Add the apples and any juice left in the bowl, and dot with butter.
  7. Roll out the second disk, cut into strips, and make a lattice pattern on top of the apples. Trim the edges.
  8. Brush the top with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
  9. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  10. Let cool for at least 2 hours before serving.
