Mini Croque Monsieur Recipe

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of white or wheat bread
  • 8 thin slices of cooked ham
  • 4 ounces of grated Gruyere cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Start by making the béchamel sauce. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  3. Add the flour and whisk constantly for about 1 minute to make a roux. Slowly add the milk while stirring constantly until the mixture thickens, for about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and set it aside.
  6. Arrange the slices of bread on a baking sheet.
  7. Spread a thin layer of béchamel sauce on each slice of bread.
  8. Place a slice of ham on 4 of the bread slices.
  9. Sprinkle the grated Gruyere cheese over the ham.
  10. Cover the ham and cheese with the remaining bread slices, béchamel sauce side down.
  11. Spread a little more béchamel sauce on top of each sandwich.
  12. Sprinkle a little more grated cheese on top of each sandwich.
  13. Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes, until the cheese on top is golden brown and bubbly.
  14. Remove from the oven and serve hot.
