Panforte of Siena Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup chopped candied citrus peel
- 1/2 cup chopped almonds
- 1/4 cup chopped hazelnuts
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 325°F/165°C.
- Line a 9-inch cake pan with parchment paper and set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and black pepper.
- Add in the chopped nuts and candied citrus peel, stir until well combined.
- In a small saucepan, heat the honey over medium heat until it becomes a bit thin.
- Pour the honey mixture over the nut and spice mixture and stir until everything is well coated.
- Transfer the mixture into the lined cake pan and press it down until it’s even on the top.
- Bake in the oven for 35 – 40 minutes, or until the edges are slightly browned.
- Allow the panforte to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, dust the top with powdered sugar (optional).
- Slice and serve.
