Panforte of Siena Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup chopped candied citrus peel
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/4 cup chopped hazelnuts
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F/165°C.
  2. Line a 9-inch cake pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and black pepper.
  4. Add in the chopped nuts and candied citrus peel, stir until well combined.
  5. In a small saucepan, heat the honey over medium heat until it becomes a bit thin.
  6. Pour the honey mixture over the nut and spice mixture and stir until everything is well coated.
  7. Transfer the mixture into the lined cake pan and press it down until it’s even on the top.
  8. Bake in the oven for 35 – 40 minutes, or until the edges are slightly browned.
  9. Allow the panforte to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, dust the top with powdered sugar (optional).
  11. Slice and serve.
