Pickled Sardines Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. fresh sardines
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, sliced

Instructions:

  1. Clean and gut the sardines, removing any scales or bones.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the white vinegar, water, sugar, salt, bay leaf, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil and stir to dissolve the sugar and salt.
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat and allow it to cool for a few minutes.
  4. Place the garlic and onion into a glass jar or container that has a tight-fitting lid.
  5. Arrange the sardines on top of the onions and garlic, packing them in tightly.
  6. Pour the vinegar mixture over the sardines, making sure to cover them completely.
  7. Seal the jar or container and refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving.
