Stuffed Green Cabbage
Ingredients:
- 1 large green cabbage, cored
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup cooked white rice
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp dried thyme leaves
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cut the core from the cabbage and carefully pull off as many leaves as you can, trying to keep them whole.
- Add the cabbage leaves to the boiling water and cook for 5-6 minutes, until they are wilted and pliable. Drain and set aside.
- In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, dried thyme, egg, 1/4 cup of tomato sauce, and salt and pepper to taste.
- Take each cabbage leaf and place about 2-3 tablespoons of filling on the stem end of the leaf. Roll up the leaf, tucking in the sides as you go, to form a packet. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.
- Spoon the remaining tomato sauce and beef broth into the bottom of a large baking dish. Place the cabbage packets on top, seam side down.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes, until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
- Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
Verdict: Stuffed green cabbage is a satisfying and flavorful dish that is perfect for a cozy family dinner. The combination of seasoned ground beef and rice, wrapped in soft and tender cabbage leaves, creates a stand-out meal that is sure to please.
