Potato Gratin without Cream Recipe
Ingredients:
- 6 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and sliced thinly
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar, parmesan or Gruyere)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat a large frying pan over medium heat and melt butter in it.
- Add onions and garlic and cook until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour over the onions and garlic and cook for another minute.
- Slowly pour milk into the pan while stirring continuously. Cook for 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Add salt and black pepper to the sauce, then add grated cheese and mix well.
- Butter a 9×13 inch oven-safe dish and layer the potatoes. Pour the sauce over the potatoes, covering them completely.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and golden brown on top.
- Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes before serving.
