Potato Gratin without Cream Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 6 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and sliced thinly
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar, parmesan or Gruyere)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat a large frying pan over medium heat and melt butter in it.
  3. Add onions and garlic and cook until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the onions and garlic and cook for another minute.
  5. Slowly pour milk into the pan while stirring continuously. Cook for 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  6. Add salt and black pepper to the sauce, then add grated cheese and mix well.
  7. Butter a 9×13 inch oven-safe dish and layer the potatoes. Pour the sauce over the potatoes, covering them completely.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and golden brown on top.
  9. Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes before serving.
