Taralli: the REAL recipe for Italian crackers

Ingredients

  • 1 lb all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp fennel seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, water, olive oil, salt and fennel seeds (if using). Knead for 5-7 minutes or until the dough is smooth and not too sticky.
  3. Divide the dough into small pieces about the size of a walnut.
  4. Roll each piece out into a long, thin rope about 6 inches long.
  5. Press the two ends together to form a circle, and then twist them together to form the traditional taralli shape.
  6. Place the taralli on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool.
