Traditional Bolognese Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 celery stick, finely chopped
  • 500g beef mince
  • 1 can chopped tomatoes (400g)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 500ml beef stock
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the carrot and celery and cook for another 5 minutes.
  4. Add the beef mince and cook until browned, breaking up any large pieces with a wooden spoon.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, beef stock, oregano, basil, thyme, salt, and pepper and stir to combine.
  6. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let the sauce cook gently for at least an hour, or until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded together.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
