Whelk recipe: idea for an aperitif (4 steps – 30 min)


Whelk Recipe: Aperitif Idea

Ingredients:

  • 30 Whelks
  • 4 Garlic Cloves, Finely Chopped
  • 2 Shallots, Finely Chopped
  • 1 Tsp Mustard Powder
  • 2 Tbsp White Wine Vinegar
  • 100g Unsalted Butter
  • 1 Tbsp Fresh Parsley, Finely Chopped
  • Salt and Black Pepper, for Seasoning

Instructions:

  1. Fill a large pan with salted water and bring it to boil. Add the Whelks and cook them for 10-12 mins until tender. Drain them and leave them to cool completely.
  2. In a separate pan, melt unsalted butter, add finely chopped garlic, shallots and cook gently for 3-4 mins until they become soft. Add mustard powder and white wine vinegar to the pan and stir it well, seasoning with salt and black pepper for taste. Let the mixture cook for 2-3 minutes at medium heat.
  3. Take the cooked and cooled Whelks out of their shells. Divide them into 4 hollow glasses or small bowls. Pour the butter, garlic, shallot mixture evenly over the whelks.
  4. Sprinkle the finely chopped parsley over the Whelks before serving.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Whelk Aperitif in the glasses, garnished with a sprig of parsley or thin slices of lemon wedges on the side. For a unique crunch, serve with a small serving of French bread.
