Mornay Egg Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 F.
  2. Butter small baking dish or ramekin.
  3. Cook egg in boiling water for 5-7 minutes for a soft boiled egg and 8-10 for a hard boiled egg, then gently remove from water, crack shell and peel.
  4. In saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and cook, whisking constantly, for 1-2 minutes to make a roux. Slowly pour in milk, whisking continually until thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in shredded Gruyere cheese until melted. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Place cooked egg into the buttered baking dish. Pour Mornay sauce over egg and bake in preheated oven until bubbly and golden brown, about 10-12 minutes.
  6. Remove from oven and serve immediately.
