Onigiri (Rice Balls) Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of Japanese short-grain rice
- 2.5 cups of water
- Nori (dried seaweed sheets)
- Filling (tuna, salmon, pickled plum, etc.)
- Salt
Instructions:
- Wash the rice with water until the water runs clear.
- Add the washed rice and 2.5 cups of water to a pot and let it soak for at least 30 minutes to an hour.
- Place the pot on the stove and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce to a low simmer and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Let it cook for about 15-20 minutes until the water is absorbed.
- Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for an additional 10 minutes with the lid still on to allow for steam to fully cook the rice.
- Sprinkle a pinch of salt over the cooked rice and mix it evenly.
- Take a small amount of rice and shape it into a triangular ball with wet palms.
- Form a small well into the center of the rice ball and put your desired filling, such as tuna, salmon, or pickled plum.
- Cover the filling with more rice and shape it into a smooth triangle.
- Wrap the onigiri with a piece of nori seaweed sheet and serve.
