Onigiri (rice balls) recipe: world cuisine

Onigiri (Rice Balls) Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of Japanese short-grain rice
  • 2.5 cups of water
  • Nori (dried seaweed sheets)
  • Filling (tuna, salmon, pickled plum, etc.)
  • Salt

Instructions:

  1. Wash the rice with water until the water runs clear.
  2. Add the washed rice and 2.5 cups of water to a pot and let it soak for at least 30 minutes to an hour.
  3. Place the pot on the stove and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce to a low simmer and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Let it cook for about 15-20 minutes until the water is absorbed.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for an additional 10 minutes with the lid still on to allow for steam to fully cook the rice.
  5. Sprinkle a pinch of salt over the cooked rice and mix it evenly.
  6. Take a small amount of rice and shape it into a triangular ball with wet palms.
  7. Form a small well into the center of the rice ball and put your desired filling, such as tuna, salmon, or pickled plum.
  8. Cover the filling with more rice and shape it into a smooth triangle.
  9. Wrap the onigiri with a piece of nori seaweed sheet and serve.
