Braised Lamb Shank with Spices

Ingredients

  • 4 lamb shanks, trimmed of excess fat
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 teaspoons cumin powder
  • 2 teaspoons coriander powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe pot over medium heat.
  3. Add onions and sauté until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add garlic and ginger and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Stir in cumin, coriander, smoked paprika, turmeric, cinnamon, salt and black pepper and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  6. Add chicken broth, tomato paste, honey and lemon juice and stir until combined.
  7. Add lamb shanks and spoon some of the sauce over them.
  8. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and transfer to the oven.
  9. Braise in the oven for 2-2½ hours, or until the meat is fork-tender.
  10. Remove from the oven and let rest for a few minutes.
  11. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve.
