Croque Monsieur of Polenta Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup polenta
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated gruyere cheese
  • 8 slices of bread, crust removed
  • 4 slices of ham
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a pot, bring the water to boil. Add the polenta and stir continuously for 3-5 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  2. Add the parmesan cheese and gruyere cheese to the polenta and mix until the cheese is fully melted.
  3. Pour the polenta onto a greased baking sheet and let it cool down for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 400°F / 200°C. Cut the polenta into 8 squares.
  5. Place each polenta square on top of a slice of bread and top with a slice of ham.
  6. Make the béchamel sauce by melting butter in a saucepan. Once the butter is melted, add the flour and stir until a paste forms. Slowly whisk in the milk and continue to stir until the sauce starts to bubble. Season with nutmeg, salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Pour the béchamel sauce over the ham and polenta sandwiches.
  8. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce is golden brown and bubbly.
  9. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.
