Indian Dal – Treat

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow split peas (also known as chana dal)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or butter
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. Soak the chana dal for at least an hour.
  2. Drain water and put the dal in a large pot with 2 cups of water, turmeric, cumin, coriander, and garam masala. Bring to a boil, and then lower the heat and let simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the dal is cooked and soft.
  3. In a separate pan, melt ghee or butter over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add garlic, ginger, green chilies, and tomatoes to the pan, and cook for 5 more minutes, or until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
  5. Add the onion-tomato mixture to the dal pot. Add salt, and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in cilantro and lemon juice.
  7. Serve hot with rice or naan bread.
