Indian Dal – Treat
Ingredients:
- 1 cup yellow split peas (also known as chana dal)
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 tablespoon ghee or butter
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
- 2 green chilies, chopped
- 2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions:
- Soak the chana dal for at least an hour.
- Drain water and put the dal in a large pot with 2 cups of water, turmeric, cumin, coriander, and garam masala. Bring to a boil, and then lower the heat and let simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the dal is cooked and soft.
- In a separate pan, melt ghee or butter over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add garlic, ginger, green chilies, and tomatoes to the pan, and cook for 5 more minutes, or until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
- Add the onion-tomato mixture to the dal pot. Add salt, and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in cilantro and lemon juice.
- Serve hot with rice or naan bread.
