Quick and Easy Croque-Monsieur Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices sandwich bread
  • 8 slices ham
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 tbsp flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Arrange the bread slices on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven for about 3-5 minutes, until lightly golden brown. Remove from the oven and set aside.
  3. Heat butter in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat until melted. Add flour and whisk continuously for 1 minute. Gradually pour in milk, whisking constantly, until sauce thickens.
  4. Add Parmesan cheese, Dijon mustard, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Stir until cheese has melted and mixture is smooth.
  5. Spread the béchamel sauce on each slice of bread.
  6. Top 4 slices of bread evenly with ham and Swiss cheese slices. Place the remaining slices of bread on top.
  7. Spread the remaining béchamel sauce on the top of each sandwich. Sprinkle with additional grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until cheese is melted and sandwich is golden brown.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
