Quick and Easy Croque-Monsieur Recipe
Ingredients:
- 8 slices sandwich bread
- 8 slices ham
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 tbsp flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 400°F.
- Arrange the bread slices on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven for about 3-5 minutes, until lightly golden brown. Remove from the oven and set aside.
- Heat butter in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat until melted. Add flour and whisk continuously for 1 minute. Gradually pour in milk, whisking constantly, until sauce thickens.
- Add Parmesan cheese, Dijon mustard, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Stir until cheese has melted and mixture is smooth.
- Spread the béchamel sauce on each slice of bread.
- Top 4 slices of bread evenly with ham and Swiss cheese slices. Place the remaining slices of bread on top.
- Spread the remaining béchamel sauce on the top of each sandwich. Sprinkle with additional grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.
- Bake in preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until cheese is melted and sandwich is golden brown.
- Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
