Roasted Bread and Pea Dhal Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow split peas
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 slices of bread (preferably sourdough)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the yellow split peas and place them in a large pot with the water. Bring the water to a boil, reduce the heat to low, and let the peas simmer for 40-50 minutes until they are tender.
  2. While the peas are cooking, heat the olive oil in a pan and sauté the onion until it becomes soft and translucent. Add the garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, turmeric, and cayenne pepper and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the spices become fragrant.
  3. Add the onion and spice mixture to the pot of cooked peas and use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until it’s smooth. Add salt and taste for seasoning.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Cut the bread into cubes and place them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Drizzle the bread with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Roast in the oven for 10-12 minutes until the bread has become crispy.
  5. Serve the roasted bread with the pea dhal and enjoy!
