Banh cuon: easy recipe (3 steps)

Banh Cuon Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1/2 cup tapioca flour
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup wood ear mushrooms, sliced thinly

Instructions:

  1. Mix rice flour, tapioca flour, salt, and water in a large mixing bowl until the flour is completely dissolved.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook until it becomes fragrant. Add ground pork, fish sauce, and black pepper until the meat is cooked through. Lastly, add wood ear mushrooms and stir well.
  3. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Using a ladle, pour a thin layer of the batter into the pan and swirl the pan to spread the batter evenly. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the edges of the rice paper start to curl up. Use a spatula to transfer the steamed rice paper to a plate and repeat until the batter is finished. Fill each steamed rice paper with the pork filling, roll it up and serve with dipping sauce on the side.

Verdict:

Banh cuon is a delicious and simple dish that is perfect as a light breakfast, a snack or even a full meal. This easy recipe takes almost no time to prepare and offers a perfect balance between tender, silky rice paper and flavorful pork filling.

Serving Suggestions:

Banh cuon tastes great with dipping sauce made from fish sauce, sugar, garlic, and chili pepper flakes. Serve with shredded lettuce, cucumber, and fresh herbs such as basil, cilantro, and mint. You can also add a side of Vietnamese pork sausage (cha lua) or fried tofu to make the dish more filling.
