Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • Oil for frying

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast and salt.
  2. In a small bowl, mix milk, melted butter and egg.
  3. Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes or until dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a damp kitchen towel and let the dough rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  6. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
  7. Using a cookie cutter, cut out circles about 2-3 inch in diameter.
  8. Place a small dollop of jam or Nutella in the center of each circle.
  9. Wrap the dough around the filling to form a ball and seal any seams.
  10. Place the dough balls on a floured surface and cover with a damp kitchen towel. Let the dough rise for another 15-20 minutes.
  11. Heat the oil in a deep-fat fryer or a large pot to 350°F.
  12. Carefully drop the dough balls into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, flipping once halfway through, about 3-4 minutes in total.
  13. Remove from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate.
  14. Roll the donuts in the sugar until they are well coated.
