Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- Oil for frying
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar for coating
- 1/4 cup jam or Nutella for filling
Directions
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast and salt.
- In a small bowl, mix milk, melted butter and egg.
- Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes or until dough becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a damp kitchen towel and let the dough rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
- Using a cookie cutter, cut out circles about 2-3 inch in diameter.
- Place a small dollop of jam or Nutella in the center of each circle.
- Wrap the dough around the filling to form a ball and seal any seams.
- Place the dough balls on a floured surface and cover with a damp kitchen towel. Let the dough rise for another 15-20 minutes.
- Heat the oil in a deep-fat fryer or a large pot to 350°F.
- Carefully drop the dough balls into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, flipping once halfway through, about 3-4 minutes in total.
- Remove from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Roll the donuts in the sugar until they are well coated.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
