Custard: Homemade Recipe at a Lower Cost

Ingredients

  • 3 cups milk
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat milk until it just starts to steam.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, cornstarch, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
  4. Gradually add hot milk to egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  5. Return mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the custard thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 10 minutes.
  6. Pour custard into a baking dish and place dish in a larger baking dish. Fill larger dish with hot water to about halfway up the sides of the smaller dish.
  7. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the custard is set but still jiggles slightly in the center.
  8. Remove custard from water bath and let cool to room temperature.
  9. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until completely chilled.
