Dark Chocolate Meringue Pie Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 pre-made pie crust
  • 4 large egg whites
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 8 oz. dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bake the pie crust according to the package directions. Set it aside to cool.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar on high speed until stiff peaks form.
  4. Gradually add the sugar to the egg white mixture, while continuing to beat on high speed. Beat until all the sugar has been added and the mixture becomes shiny and stiff.
  5. Spoon the meringue mixture into the pie crust, making sure to spread it evenly.
  6. Bake the pie for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the meringue is lightly browned. Let the pie cool completely.
  7. While the pie is cooling, place the chopped chocolate, heavy cream, unsalted butter, and sea salt in a medium saucepan over low heat. Stir constantly until all the ingredients have melted and are well combined. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  8. Add the vanilla extract to the chocolate mixture and stir well.
  9. Pour the chocolate mixture over the cooled pie, making sure to spread it evenly. Let the pie sit at room temperature until the chocolate cools and hardens slightly.
  10. Serve the pie cold with whipped cream on top, if desired.
