Kouglof Recipe: Christmas Pastry

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • butter or oil for greasing
  • powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Add the warm milk and softened butter. Mix using a wooden spoon or a dough mixer until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Add the beaten eggs and mix until well combined.
  4. Stir in the raisins and sliced almonds.
  5. Transfer the dough to a lightly-floured surface and knead for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Grease a Kouglof pan or a Bundt pan with butter or oil.
  7. Transfer the dough to the greased pan and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Bake the Kouglof for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes.
  11. Carefully remove from the pan and let cool completely on a wire rack.
  12. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Verdict:

The Kouglof is a perfect Christmas pastry that is both sweet and savory. The raisins and sliced almonds add a nice crunchy texture, while the powdered sugar gives it a nice touch of sweetness. It pairs well with a hot cup of coffee or tea.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream.
  • Serve with a side of fresh berries or fruit.
