Makis – Treat Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 sheets of nori
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1/2 cucumber, sliced
  • 1/2 carrot, julienned
  • 1/2 red pepper, julienned
  • Soy sauce and wasabi for serving

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and place in a saucepan with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Cook for 18 minutes, then remove from the heat and let sit for 10 minutes.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat over medium heat until the sugar and salt have dissolved.
  3. Add the vinegar mixture to the rice and mix well. Spread the rice out in a large bowl to cool.
  4. Place a sheet of nori shiny side down on a bamboo sushi mat. Spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.
  5. Arrange a few slices of avocado, cucumber, carrot, and red pepper in a line across the rice, about 1 inch from the bottom.
  6. Use the mat to roll the nori and rice over the vegetables, pressing gently to keep the roll compact.
  7. Continue rolling until the entire sheet of nori is rolled up. Repeat with the remaining nori and rice.
  8. Using a sharp knife, slice the rolls into bite-size pieces.
  9. Serve with soy sauce and wasabi.
