Ingredients

  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 225°F (110°C).
  2. In a clean mixing bowl, beat the egg whites until frothy using an electric mixer or stand mixer.
  3. Add cream of tartar and salt, continue to beat until soft peaks form.
  4. Gradually add the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, while continuing to beat. Ensure the sugar has dissolved before adding the next spoonful.
  5. After all the sugar has been added, continue to beat until the mixture is glossy and stiff peaks form.
  6. Add vanilla extract and food coloring (if desired) and mix until combined.
  7. Scoop the mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Create the desired size and shape of the meringues, leaving space between them.
  8. Bake the meringues for 1 1/2 – 2 hours until they are dry and firm. Rotate the baking sheet halfway through the cooking time.
  9. Turn off the oven and allow the meringues to cool completely in the oven.
