Old-fashioned Tatin Tart Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 4 to 5 tablespoons ice water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

  • 6 apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, 1/4 cup sugar, and salt.
  3. Add cubed butter and cut in with a pastry cutter or fork until mixture is crumbly.
  4. Add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until dough comes together.
  5. Knead the dough until smooth and form into a disk. Wrap with plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  6. In a 9-inch cast iron or oven-safe skillet, melt 1/2 cup butter over medium heat.
  7. Add 1/2 cup sugar and stir to combine.
  8. Add sliced apples and lemon juice, stirring until apples are coated and slightly softened.
  9. Remove the skillet from heat and set aside.
  10. Roll out chilled dough on a floured surface to fit the size of the skillet.
  11. Carefully place the dough over the skillet and tuck in the edges around the apples.
  12. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbling.
  13. Let cool for 10 minutes.
  14. Using oven mitts, carefully flip skillet onto a large plate to release the tart.
  15. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
