Pastéis – Small Slippers

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 cup of diced cooked meat (chicken, beef, or pork)
  • 1/2 cup of diced onions
  • 1/4 cup of diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup of diced olives
  • 1/4 cup of diced parsley
  • 2 cloves of minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • Oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a small pot, bring the water, butter, and salt to a boil.
  2. Add the flour and stir until the mixture forms a ball of dough.
  3. Remove from heat and let the dough cool for a few minutes.
  4. Mix the egg yolk into the dough and knead until the dough is smooth.
  5. Divide the dough into small pieces and roll them out into circles.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix together the cooked meat, onions, tomatoes, olives, parsley, garlic, salt, and black pepper.
  7. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each circle of dough.
  8. Close the dough and pinch the edges to seal.
  9. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry the pastéis until they are golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
