Peach and Almond Turnovers Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 1/4 cup cold vegetable shortening, cut into small cubes
- 1/2 cup chilled milk
- 2 cups peeled, pitted and chopped peaches
- 1/2 cup sliced almonds
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp almond extract
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 tbsp coarse sugar
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add in butter and shortening, using a pastry blender or your fingertips, mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs and there are no large pieces of butter remaining.
- Add chilled milk to the dough and mix just until the dough comes together.
- Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out 6 rounds and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- In another bowl, mix together the peaches, sliced almonds, sugar, and almond extract.
- Divide the peach mixture evenly between the rounds, spooning it onto one half of the round. Fold the other half of the round over the filling and crimp the edges to seal.
- Brush the beaten egg over the turnovers and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, until the turnovers are golden brown and flaky.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
