Poached Pear: Long Live Winter!
Ingredients:
- 4 ripe but firm pears (peeled and cored)
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup red wine
- 1/2 cup sugar
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- In a large saucepan, combine water, red wine, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon stick, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.
- Add the pears to the saucepan and reduce the heat to a simmer.
- Cook the pears until they are tender, which can vary from 15-25 minutes, depending on the ripeness of the pears.
- Occasionally, spoon some of the poaching liquid over the pears.
- When they are tender, use a slotted spoon to remove the pears from the poaching liquid.
- Remove the cinnamon stick from the pan and increase the heat, bringing the liquid to a boil. Continue cooking the liquid until it is reduced down to half of its original amount, approximately 15-20 minutes.
- Strain the reduced poaching liquid through a fine-mesh sieve and discard the solids. Let the liquid cool for about 5 minutes.
- Arrange the pears in bowls and pour the reduced poaching liquid over them.
Verdict:
This Poached Pear recipe is a delicious way to add some warmth and sweetness to a cool winter evening. The poaching liquid infuses the pears with rich flavor and a soft texture that perfectly complements the wine’s fruity notes.
