Tarte Tatin Recipe in 2 Cookings

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 3 to 4 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored and sliced into thin wedges
  • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry, thawed

Directions:

Cooking #1: Preparing the Caramel and Apples

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Line a 9-inch pie dish with parchment paper.
  3. In a medium-sized skillet, melt the sugar over medium heat; stir continuously until it turns golden brown.
  4. Once the sugar completely melts, add the butter and swirl the pan around until it melts and combines with the caramel.
  5. Add the apple wedges to the pan and cook them with the caramel until they are translucent and soften. It would take about 5-7 minutes to cook the apple wedges.
  6. Once cooked, arrange the apple wedges at the bottom of the prepared pie dish, making sure to spread them evenly across the dish.
  7. Place the pie dish with the apples and caramel in the fridge while you prepare the pastry dough.

Cooking #2: Assembling and Baking

  1. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry and cut it into a round shape that’s slightly bigger than the pie dish.
  2. Remove the caramelized apple mixture from the fridge and lay the puff pastry on top of it, tucking the edges of the dough down the sides of the dish.
  3. Poke a few holes in the top of the pastry with a fork to allow steam to escape while baking.
  4. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  5. Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes.
  6. Take the dish and place a serving plate on top of it upside down. In one swift motion, turn the dish over, so that the plate is now on the bottom, with the pastry and apple mixture on top.
  7. Remove the parchment paper if needed and let the Tarte Tatin cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve Tarte Tatin warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It can also be enjoyed at room temperature for breakfast, brunch or dessert.
