Apple Pie Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- Ice water (6 to 8 tablespoons)
- 6 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- Egg wash (1 egg mixed with 1 tablespoon water)
- Coarse sugar (for sprinkling on top)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and sugar until well combined.
- Add the cold butter to the bowl and use your fingers to quickly work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse sand.
- Add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together into a ball. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
- Roll out the chilled dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish.
- Spoon the apple mixture into the pie crust and dot with the 3 tablespoons of butter.
- Roll out the remaining dough and use a knife or pastry cutter to create strips of dough to create a lattice pattern on top of the pie.
- Brush the egg wash over the top of the lattice crust and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is hot and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
