Babka Recipe
Ingredients:
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon instant yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 2 large eggs + 1 egg yolk (room temperature)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 1 cup Nutella or chocolate spread
Instructions:
- Combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment.
- Heat the milk in a small saucepan until warm, not hot.
- Add the warm milk, eggs, and egg yolk to the dry ingredients. Mix on low speed for 1 minute.
- Add the softened butter and continue mixing until the dough comes together.
- Increase the speed to medium and knead for 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Grease a large bowl with oil or baking spray and place the dough in the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and allow it to rise in a warm, draft-free environment for at least an hour.
- Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down. Divide the dough into two pieces and roll each one out into a large rectangle.
- Spread the Nutella or chocolate spread over each rectangle, leaving a small margin around the edges.
- Roll each rectangle lengthwise into a tight log.
- Twist the two logs together and place into a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
- Cover the loaf pan with plastic wrap and allow it to rise again for 30-45 minutes until it has risen above the edges of the pan.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F / 180°C.
- Bake the babka for 35-45 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
- Allow the babka to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove it from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
