Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs + 1 egg yolk (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 cup Nutella or chocolate spread

Instructions:

  1. Combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment.
  2. Heat the milk in a small saucepan until warm, not hot.
  3. Add the warm milk, eggs, and egg yolk to the dry ingredients. Mix on low speed for 1 minute.
  4. Add the softened butter and continue mixing until the dough comes together.
  5. Increase the speed to medium and knead for 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  6. Grease a large bowl with oil or baking spray and place the dough in the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and allow it to rise in a warm, draft-free environment for at least an hour.
  7. Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down. Divide the dough into two pieces and roll each one out into a large rectangle.
  8. Spread the Nutella or chocolate spread over each rectangle, leaving a small margin around the edges.
  9. Roll each rectangle lengthwise into a tight log.
  10. Twist the two logs together and place into a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  11. Cover the loaf pan with plastic wrap and allow it to rise again for 30-45 minutes until it has risen above the edges of the pan.
  12. Preheat the oven to 350°F / 180°C.
  13. Bake the babka for 35-45 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  14. Allow the babka to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove it from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
