Beaufort and onion turnovers

Beaufort and Onion Turnovers Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 200g Beaufort cheese, grated
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  2. In a frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
  3. Add the brown sugar, salt and black pepper, and continue to cook for another 5-7 minutes until the onion caramelizes and becomes golden brown. Remove the pan from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
  4. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut the pastry into 4 equal squares.
  5. Divide the caramelized onions among the 4 squares of puff pastry, placing the onions in the center of each square. Top each square with grated Beaufort cheese and chopped parsley.
  6. Beat the egg in a small bowl. Brush the edges of the puff pastry squares with the beaten egg.
  7. Fold the squares in half, forming a triangle shape. Use a fork to press down on the edges of the pastry to seal the filling inside.
  8. Brush the tops of the turnovers with the remaining beaten egg.
  9. Place the turnovers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  10. Transfer the turnovers to a wire rack to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Verdict:

The combination of salty Beaufort cheese and sweet caramelized onions creates an irresistible filling inside crispy and buttery puff pastry. These turnovers are perfect as a starter or snack.
