Classic Liège waffles – Régal

Classic Liège Waffles – Régal Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup lukewarm milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened and cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup pearl sugar (or crushed sugar cubes)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the milk, sugar and yeast. Let the mixture sit for 3-5 minutes until the yeast is foamy.
  2. Add the eggs one at a time, stirring well after each addition.
  3. Gradually add in the flour, vanilla extract and salt while stirring until the mixture forms a thick dough.
  4. Beat in the butter one piece at a time until it is fully incorporated and the dough is smooth.
  5. Stir in the pearl sugar, mixing thoroughly so that it is evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  6. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rest in a warm, draft-free place for 1 hour.
  7. Preheat your waffle iron to medium-high heat.
  8. Divide the dough into 10-12 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.
  9. Place one ball at a time in the center of your waffle iron and close the lid.
  10. Cook the waffles for 3-5 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crisp on the outside.
  11. Repeat with the remaining dough balls until all the waffles are cooked.

Serving Suggestions

Classic Liège waffles are perfect on their own, but they’re also delicious with a variety of toppings. A drizzle of melted chocolate or caramel sauce, a sprinkle of powdered sugar, or a dollop of whipped cream are all popular choices. Serve them warm and fresh from the waffle iron for best results.

Verdict

These Classic Liège waffles are a true Régal – a delight for the senses! The crunchy pearl sugar adds a delectable texture and sweetness that sets them apart from other waffles. They’re a great option for breakfast, brunch, or dessert.
