King Cake with Marzipan Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup marzipan, chopped
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • colored sugar or sprinkles (purple, green and gold)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream sugar and butter until fluffy. Add in salt, milk, egg and yeast mixture and blend well.
  3. Slowly add flour and mix until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5 minutes or until smooth and elastic.
  4. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover with a towel and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Gently punch down the dough and knead in the marzipan pieces until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  6. Shape the dough into a circle and place onto a greased baking sheet. Cover with a towel and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  8. In a small bowl, beat the egg yolk and water together. Brush the egg wash over the top of the cake.
  9. Sprinkle the colored sugar or sprinkles over the top of the cake, alternating colors in sections.
  10. Bake the king cake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool to room temperature before serving.
