Old-fashioned Charlotte – Delicious

Old-fashioned Charlotte Recipe

Ingredients

  • 6-8 cups sliced apples, peeled and cored
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 loaf sliced white bread, crusts removed and cut into strips
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine sliced apples, sugar, 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook until apples are soft and mixture has thickened, about 15-20 minutes. Set aside to cool.
  3. Brush the inside of a 9-inch cake pan with melted butter. Arrange bread strips along the sides and bottom of the pan, overlapping slightly, and pressing the bread into the pan. Leave some bread strips hanging over the edges for the top layer.
  4. Spoon the cooled apple mixture into the bread-lined pan. Top with the remaining bread strips, tucking them in around the edges to seal in the apple mixture.
  5. Brush the top of the bread with melted butter.
  6. Bake for 30-40 minutes until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove from oven and cool for 10 minutes. Invert onto a serving plate and serve warm.
