Orangettes: chocolate recipe

Orangettes: Chocolate Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium-sized oranges
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 8 ounces of dark chocolate

Instructions:

  1. Using a knife, slice the top and bottom off each orange to reveal the flesh of the fruit.
  2. With the flat surface of the orange on the cutting board, make a series of slender cuts through the rind, from top to bottom, removing wide strips of rind until the majority of the white pith is exposed.
  3. Next, cut the strips of rind into thin strips — around 1/8 inch wide. Set these aside and discard any excess pith or pulp.
  4. In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, add the orange rind strips and let simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the rind is softened.
  5. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked orange rind to a wire rack and let dry for about an hour, or until the rind is no longer wet but still pliable. Reserve the remaining syrup.
  6. Melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler or a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Once melted, remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  7. Dip each orange strip halfway into the chocolate and place on a parchment lined sheet. Let cool in the fridge or at room temperature until the chocolate is set.
  8. Drizzle some of the reserved syrup over the Orangettes before serving.

Verdict:

These Orangettes are a delicious combination of tangy and sweet, with a little bit of crunch from the chocolate. They make for a great snack or dessert.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve these Orangettes as an accompaniment to coffee or tea, or add them as a finishing touch to a cheese board. They can also be gifted in a decorative box.
