Chiacchiere (Sweet fried dough)

Chiacchiere Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add in the eggs, melted butter, and whole milk, mixing until a firm dough forms. (If the dough is too dry, add in one tablespoon of milk at a time until it comes together.)
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for a few minutes until it becomes smooth.
  4. Divide the dough into four portions and roll each portion out until it is very thin – about 1/8 inch thick.
  5. Use a pastry cutter or sharp knife to cut the dough into strips that are about 2 inches wide and 5 inches long.
  6. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to make a slit in the center of each strip, then pull one end of the strip through the slit to create a bow-like shape.
  7. In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350 degrees F.
  8. Carefully place a few pieces of chiacchiere at a time into the hot oil and fry them for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they turn golden brown.
  9. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried chiacchiere from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain off any excess oil.
  10. Dust the chiacchiere generously with powdered sugar while they are still warm, then transfer them to a serving tray.
  11. Serve and enjoy!

Verdict:

Chiacchiere is a delightful sweet treat that is light and crispy on the outside, yet soft and tender on the inside. The addition of powdered sugar gives it a nice sweetness that complements the subtle flavor of the dough. It’s perfect for celebrations and special occasions or as an afternoon snack with a cup of hot tea.

Serving Suggestions:

Chiacchiere is best served fresh and warm. You can serve it alone, but it pairs well with other Italian treats such as cannoli or tiramisu. It’s also perfect with a side of espresso or coffee.
