Chiacchiere Recipe
Ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- vegetable oil for frying
- powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add in the eggs, melted butter, and whole milk, mixing until a firm dough forms. (If the dough is too dry, add in one tablespoon of milk at a time until it comes together.)
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for a few minutes until it becomes smooth.
- Divide the dough into four portions and roll each portion out until it is very thin – about 1/8 inch thick.
- Use a pastry cutter or sharp knife to cut the dough into strips that are about 2 inches wide and 5 inches long.
- Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to make a slit in the center of each strip, then pull one end of the strip through the slit to create a bow-like shape.
- In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350 degrees F.
- Carefully place a few pieces of chiacchiere at a time into the hot oil and fry them for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they turn golden brown.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried chiacchiere from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain off any excess oil.
- Dust the chiacchiere generously with powdered sugar while they are still warm, then transfer them to a serving tray.
- Serve and enjoy!
Verdict:
Chiacchiere is a delightful sweet treat that is light and crispy on the outside, yet soft and tender on the inside. The addition of powdered sugar gives it a nice sweetness that complements the subtle flavor of the dough. It’s perfect for celebrations and special occasions or as an afternoon snack with a cup of hot tea.
Serving Suggestions:
Chiacchiere is best served fresh and warm. You can serve it alone, but it pairs well with other Italian treats such as cannoli or tiramisu. It’s also perfect with a side of espresso or coffee.
